Yew Walk 1909 NEW Centenary Garden New Wedding Packages Designer: Description of Garden: A five-acre garden, maintained by the family with three days' help a week, surrounds and complements a historic family home dating from the 16th century, giving a series of garden rooms of great variety, from the formal "old cottage garden" at the front, with a delightfully informal planting, to a robust pergola of Bargate stone extending east, by W.D. Caroe. The unique Water Garden by Gertrude Jekyll (1911) comprises a succession of small ponds crossed by stone paths and bridges. Island beds in the old orchard allow for experiment with more "modern" plants, and double borders created in part of the former vegetable garden, allow use of plants of special interest. A stream runs through the garden from the north, enclosed by large yew hedges, dating from 1909. Originally planted as a rose garden, the depredations of the wild deer have led the owners to remove the roses and re-plant with foliage plants to give year round interest. History: Laid down in 1909 by W. D. Caroe. Water Garden by Gertrude Jekyll in 1911. Adaptation for easier maintenance over the past 50 years.
