Fascinating Maxwelton Collection of local bygones in Threave House. Designer: Description of Garden: Threave is delightful in all seasons. It is best known for its spectacular springtime daffodils, nearly 200, some of which are unique varieties. The garden spans some 60 acres and is made up of a large series of individual display gardens set amongst a wooded area with amazing views out to the surrounding countryside. The individual gardens include the Rock Garden, Peat Garden, a walled fruit, flower and vegetable garden, Secret Garden, a rose garden, a heather garden and a wooded garden. There are also herbaceous borders, annual bedding displays and display glass houses. There is a dwarf conifer collection, an orchard, a number of water features and waterfalls and a fine collection of trees and shrubs. The garden is used as a training ground for the National Trust of Scotland's School of Practical Gardening. The wider estate includes beautiful walks, bird hides and a special protection area for breeding waders and wintering wildfowl. History: Threave Castle and its lands were originally a country sporting estate which the Trust took on from Major A. F. Gordon, DSO, MC in 1959. The garden at this point was non-existent, apart from shelter belts, daffodil banks and a walled fruit and vegetable garden. Since 1960 the Trust has continued to develop what one sees today mainly as a teaching facility for training practical horticulture.
