Designer: Description of Garden: A picturesque garden surrounding moated ruins of a 14th century castle, the hilly site provides breathtaking views from the Bastion across the Quarry Garden to the Valley and woodlands beyond. Ghent Azaleas and Rhododendrons provide a spectacle of colour in May and June. Close to the castle ruin is a herb garden and the inner courtyard is planted with roses and clematis. Near the lake is a reclining figure in bronze by Henry Moore. The great trees, including Liquidambar and Tulip trees and the many flowering shrubs, take on wonderful colours in the autumn reflected in woodlands of the surrounding 700 acre estate. The estate walks are open all year round. History: Edward Hussey created the overall design with advice from William Sawrey Gilpin. The castle, really a fortified manor house with 16th and 17th century additions, was considered uninhabitable and was selectively demolished to leave romantic walls and towers. The garden was created in the 1840's, but additional planting, to extend colour throughout the year, was initiated by Christopher Hussey between 1950 and his death in 1970.
