Designer: Hugh Johnson Description of Garden: The 16th century Hall is in the middle of a 12 acre garden and arboretum stretching mainly North and South giving surprisingly long parkland views. That to the South leads into the hidden village over its old horse pond. That to the North leads through a remarkable landscaped arboretum with many rare trees, to a classical temple reflected in a serpentine pond. To the East side of the house lies the moat and a secluded water garden; on the other side is the relatively formal walled 17th century garden with straight paths, apple trees and overflowing mixed borders. Throughout there is a sense of discovery, as vistas of unusual planting succeed each other. History: The Elizabethan hall must have had a garden, but the only trace is the 100-yard long moat to the East. The garden walls to the West were built in 1698 and the courtyard to the North with its old stables must be even earlier. The present garden was started in 1936 by Lady Carlyle, who lived here until 1970. Since that date it has been extended by the present owners, Hugh and Judy Johnson.
