Gold Award Green Tourism Business Scheme Designer: Description of Garden: This is a delightful natural woodland and water garden of over 180 acres with its own private inner Broad, with boat trips from the beginning of May to the end of August. This garden has much to offer at all times of the year, snowdrop and camellias in January and February, daffodils and narcissi in March, carpets of primroses and unusual plants such as Lysichitum Americanum (Skunk Cabbage) in April, followed by bluebells, azaleas and rhododendrons in May and June, and the spectacular naturalised collection of candelabra primulas throughout May. Wild flowers, flowering shrubs, butterflies and dragonflies appear in summer and 95 species of woodland and water birds all year. This includes all 3 native woodpeckers, tree creepers, nuthatches etc., herons, ducks (various), geese - both canada and greylag - cormorants, great crested grebe coots, moorhens and kingfishers. The Autumn colours are wonderful, especially the leaves, berries and fungi. Winter walks afford even more views of the Broads, which are hidden by the lush vegetation of summer. The garden is entirely organically managed for the benefit of the plants and wildlife. History: The garden was created by the second Lord Fairhaven, Henry Broughton. It was inspired by the Savill garden at Windsor, which was designed by Sir Eric Savill who was a great friend of Lord Fairhaven. The present Lord Fairhaven, Ailwyn Broughton, is Chairman of the Fairhaven Garden trustees. The Fairhaven Garden is a private trust and is a Registered charity (265686).
