The Castle Armoury is home to one of the most important collections of arms in existence. Designer: Description of Garden: Culzean Castle and Country Park are situated on the Ayrshire coast and lie within an extensive and significant historic designed landscape of around 286 hectares. The gardens and garden-related policies cover an area of approximately 12 hectares stretching from the Castle and its dramatic cliff-top setting, to the Swan Pond at the southern area of the property. In the more formal areas around the Castle are the Fountain Court and Terraces, where the plant collection reflects the mild climate influenced by the Gulf Stream. The key feature of the North Walled Garden is the double herbaceous border, complemented by traditional fruit and vegetables. The South Walled garden is laid out to a contemporary design, within which sit a newly restored Victorian Vinery and a grotto. Informal woodland walks link the main areas of interest. Significant garden buildings include the Orangery and the Camellia House, and a Pagoda at the Swan Pond. History: The main designed landscape around the Castle was laid out c. 1800 in the Picturesque style. Culzean Castle Estate was acquired by the Trust in 1945. Culzean Castle policies were given to the National Trust for Scotland in 1945. The Country Park, which includes the garden was designated in 1969, the first in Scotland. It is owned and administered by the Trust and is managed and financed in partnership with South Ayrshire Council. The property is quite deliberately maintained as an example of a country house in an appropriate setting.
