Riverside cafe Designer: John Treasure Description of Garden: This glamorous seven acre garden, made to compliment a stylish Georgian house, is now beautiful and mature. The fluid design is enhanced by interesting plants, imaginatively used and comprehensively labelled. There are good roses and herbaceous borders and a pleasing series of water gardens, but Burford means Clematis - over 500 varieties - cleverly trained, grown and displayed among shrubs and in Treasure's Clematis Nursery. In summer there may be as many as 80 varieties in flower at one time. There are a vast number of other varieties of plants, including one of the garden's great wonders, the giant Wisteria macrobotrys 'Burford', which in May cascades spectacularly down the back of the house. Planted originally in 1960, it fills the air with divine perfume, and the racemes hang sometimes two feet in length. A Georgian turfed bridge spans the river and takes you to an area of wildflowers and meadow, which during the summer months takes on the role of 'Art Gallery', offering contrast to the intensively nurtured gardens around the house. History: Originally Designed by John Treasure in the 1950's. The current designer is Burford Garden Company.
