 Description of Garden
Designer:
Castle Drogo is spectacularly sited on a rocky outcrop with fine views of Dartmoor. The twentieth century formal garden, which is the highest garden owned by the National Trust, lies to the north-east of the castle and is linked to the castle with yew hedges. The centrepiece is the sunken Rose Garden, where Hybrid Teas and Floribundas grow. On either side are the stunning herbaceous borders, at their best in late June and July, with yew arbours roofed with Persian Ironwood (Parrotia persica 'Pendula') at each end. Steps lead to a formal herb garden and between shrub borders to a vast circular croquet lawn. Nearer to the castle is the rhododendron garden which gives spring interest from a variety of specimens, cherries and magnolias.
 History of Garden
The castle, a Norman fantasy, was designed by Edwin Lutyens for Julius Drewe but, although Lutyens influence can be seen in features of the garden, such as the yew hedges and serpentine paths, the garden is likely to have been planned by George Dillistone, a garden designer from Kent.
