| Description of Garden | Designer:
Bridgeman, Leoni, John Fleming, Jellicoe |
|||||
| Spectacular estate overlooking River Thames with a series of gardens each with its own character featuring roses, topiary, statuary, water gardens, formal parterre, woodland and riverside walks and informal vistas. The famous balustrade which graces the terrace was acquired by Astor from the Villa Borghese in Rome. He also acquired some ancient Roman sarcophagi, urns and statuary which are spread amongst the formal gardens. The dramatic 'Fountain of Love' seems appropriate. | ||||||
| History of Garden | ||||||
| Originally built for the Duke of Buckingham, the favourite of Charles II in 1666, it is a superb site on a cliff overlooking the Thames and its gardens and terraces have been worked on by many famous designers, most by recently by Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe for the Astors in 1959. The house, which was built by Sir Charles Barry in 1850 and subsequently bought by the first Viscount Astor in 1893, and its gardens, featured in the famous scandal in the 1960's involving John Profumo, the then War Minister. The house is now a luxury hotel. | ||||||
